Cleveland and Akron Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) – Dr. Jason Leedy

If you are disappointed with the size and shape of your nose, our experienced plastic surgeon, serving the Akron and Cleveland area, can help. Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is designed to recontour the nose to make it smaller or larger and more proportionate to other facial features. This commonly performed procedure can also improve breathing problems caused by a deviated septum.

Rhinoplasty

Our plastic surgeon in Cleveland performs rhinoplasty (nose surgery) for individuals who wish to enhance the appearance of the nose. Also known as a "nose job," nasal recontouring has a number of aesthetic and health benefits including:

  • Reduction or increase in the size of the nose
  • Alteration of the bridge or nose-tip
  • Alteration of the nostrils
  • Better aesthetic balance of facial features
  • Correction of structural defects or congenital deformities that can cause breathing problems
  • Correction of broken nasal bones due to traumatic injury

Dr. Jason Leedy also performs secondary rhinoplasty for patients who have undergone rhinoplasty previously but are dissatisfied with the results. Because of the scarring left over from previous surgery, secondary rhinoplasty is a complex procedure that requires exceptional skill to produce the desired outcome. Dr. Leedy is experienced in reconstructive surgery and honed his ability under the leaders in the field of plastic surgery and rhinoplasty surgery. He has authored a book chapter on nasal and chin relationships, which is in the definitive textbook for nose reshaping, “Dallas Rhinoplasty: Surgery by the Masters, Vol II."

If you are a resident of Mentor, Willoughby, Akron, Canton, or Cleveland who is considering rhinoplasty, please contact the Cleveland Plastic Surgery Institute. Our plastic surgeon will meet with you in a private consultation to discuss your goals and provide solutions that can transform your appearance.

The Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty begins with an in-depth consultation with Dr. Jason Leedy, where you will discuss your aesthetic goals and all aspects of the procedure. The actual operation can be performed on an out-patient basis under local anesthesia combined with a sedative, or under general anesthesia. More extensive procedures may require a hospital stay, typically for just one night.

Dr. Leedy will make incisions along the inside of the nostrils, or on the septum, the strip of tissue that separates them. He will then reshape the bone and cartilage to the form the desired contours, and close the incisions. In order for the nose to retain its new shape following rhinoplasty, a splint will be applied to the area. Nasal packing may also be required for a few days to keep the septum stabilized and control bleeding. Depending on the extent of the procedure, rhinoplasty is typically completed within about an hour or two.

Patients at our Cleveland facility may also opt to combine their nose surgery with chin enhancement, Restylane® treatment, eyelid surgery, or face lift for a more complete makeover.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Some bleeding and swelling can be expected after rhinoplasty. The head will need to be elevated for at least one day after the procedure. Any discomfort and pain can be controlled with medication. The nasal splint and stitches are usually removed one to two weeks after nose surgery, and patients are generally able to return to work and daily routines after about a week. Patients should also note that incisions are minimal and placed in very discreet areas, so any residual scarring should be virtually invisible.

The desired effects of rhinoplasty may take a few weeks to appear, and the final results of rhinoplasty may not be apparent until six to twelve months after the procedure.

Rhinoplasty Risks

Complications arising from rhinoplasty are rare; however, as with any surgical procedure, there are risks. The risks associated with nose surgery include:

  • Reaction to anesthesia
  • Numbness
  • Scarring at the base of the nose
  • Nerve damage
  • Over- or under-correction of the nose, requiring secondary rhinoplasty
  • Blood collection under the skin
  • Infection
  • Excessive bleeding

Our plastic surgeon, serving the Akron and Cleveland area, has made rhinoplasty and revision nose surgery focal points of his career as a plastic surgeon, and will take every precaution to make sure the results of your procedure are successful.
